On-demand, instant-play videogame provider OnLive is finally ready to expand its service beyond browsers to your TV screen. The start-up company announced today that its little black gaming box is set for launch in December, and with a nice little holiday promotion to boot.
The OnLive MicroConsole, which ships with a wireless controller and HDMI cable, will ship on December 2 and is available for order now at the OnLive store. And early adopters of the system will receive a free, $50 OnLive game of their choice -- all for $99.
"The OnLive Game System marks the start of a new era for videogames and home entertainment," OnLive founder and CEO Steve Perlman said in a statement. "Not only is the OnLive Game System the fastest, simplest way to play, watch and test-drive top-tier games instantly on the living room big screen, it also opens the door to a new world of options for gaming and entertainment—from media-rich social networking and massive spectating to game portability across TV, PC, Mac and mobile devices."
The cloud gaming console launches with more than 35 games available in the OnLive marketplace, including NBA 2K11, Mafia II, and Borderlands, and all games will be available for a three- or five-day rental ($3.99 or $8.99), or full purchase, with a handful of small indie games available for $4.99 and full AAA titles priced at $49.99.
OnLive also announced it is working on a flat-rate monthly subscription that will provide unlimited access to a library of games for a set fee.
"Just as OnLive is bringing innovation to the gameplay experience, we are bringing innovative pricing models to the marketplace that offer extraordinary access to great games to fit any budget," stated OnLive VP John Spinale.
